Toronto is the microcosm of the macrocosm of Canada. It is the largest city in Canada and boasts to be one of the most multicultural cities in North America. “Recognized by both the United Nations and the BBC as the most diverse city in the world, it stands apart as a benchmark of multiculturalism. According to the official data, over 50% of the city’s residents were born outside of Canada, making it home to nationalities from around the world.”
Although English is the most spoken language in Toronto, 150 languages and cultures are active across the city making it truly a city of cultural diversity.
Following is a list of the nine most spoken languages across the Greater Toronto Area:
- Chinese Mandarin
- Chinese Cantonese
- Tamil
- Spanish
- Tagalog
- Italian
- Portuguese
- Persian (Farsi)
- Russian
The most important part of public speaking is that the speaker can be understood or all else is lost. Accents can be music to the listener’s ears but only if the words they speak are comprehensible. Public speakers whose first language is not English have a challenging task if speaking predominately to an English-speaking audience. Audiences quickly become disinterested and disengaged by a speaker who enunciates words incorrectly, distorts the word usage, or speakers who speak too quickly, loudly, or softly to camouflage their lack of English language proficiency.
There is such a rich tapestry of culture, skills, and knowledge for ESL Speakers to share with audiences.
I opened The Speaker Skills Institute in 1990 after many years of teaching High School, College, and University students English, Dramatic Arts, Visual Arts, and Cooperative Education.
ESL was one of the first Programs that I taught. In completing my Master of Education Degree at the University of Toronto, I was privileged to meet and work with a vast international diverse group of students and Academia.
Now 32 years later, I see the importance to offer An English As A Second Language Program specializing in Public Speaking, tips, skills and strategies to help speakers be understood, appreciated, and recognized as Professionally trained Public Speakers.
